Animal Aid Shelter Wishlist

Animal Aid on average cares for 100 animals at any given time. Caring for our animals requires more than time from our dedicated group of volunteers; it also requires money and supplies. Because Animal Aid does not euthanize animals with treatable illnesses, veterinary care takes priority when we have to choose where to apply our limited cash.

The Giving Tree at Western Pet Supply in Raleigh Hills

Celebrate the Season of Giving

Here's a festive way to help! Our Giving Trees are covered with ornaments, each describing a specific item from the list below. Pick an ornament/item that suits your taste (and budget) and presto! Instantly you've caught the spirit of the season.

You will find Giving Trees hosted by three generous local businesses:

Our needs range from the mundane (toilet paper and cat litter) to the stimulating (cat environment enrichment items) – something for every pocketbook and mood:

One of the realities of shelter life is that we must "rely on the kindness of strangers" – but then, doesn't your donation make you one of our family?

I've Got Questions!

Just for the Fun of It!

Note: Thanks to your generosity, our CAT toy collection is currently up-to-snuff – please consider giving something else on the wishlist.

The pets at our facility and in our foster homes need toys that help them develop healthy, active bodies and brains. And we need toys that support a range of abilities – many of our charges are young and daring, but many come from frightening, deprived pasts and are just learning that it is safe to play. Some delight in a physical challenge, while others have a physical challenge built into their lives, and need gentler pastimes.

Because dogs come in such a broad range of sizes, it is sometimes difficult to provide our foster homes with appropriately sized toys – you might consider picking one good toy (e.g., a Kong) and donating one of each available size.

While hands-on toy shopping is the most fun, don't forget that many suitable toys are available through online sources like:

Animal Maintenance Supplies

The kitties are running very low on high quality cat food (wet & dry). They'd love your help filling up their bowls! Donations can be dropped off at the shelter Mon-Fri 11am - 4pm.

  • MOST URGENT NEED: Good quality dry cat food with meat or poultry as a first ingredient (not by-products or meal) and preferably no corn in the ingredients if possible – Evo, Wellness, Solid Gold, Felidae, Castor & Pollux Organix are good examples of what we need. Western Pet Supply, PetUtopia, and Sellwood Dog Supply will be glad to explain why these are good choices.

  • MOST URGENT NEED: Canned cat food, beef or poultry preferred (the cats' favorites are Friskies and Fancy Feast, the ground meat types rather than sliced or diced)
  • Evo cat food Ancestral Diet made with turkey and chicken (purple bag)  for our sensitive stomach kitties.
  • Pouches of Royal Canin Renal LP cat food to tempt some of our more fragile guests
  • Litter box with it's removeable liner
  • Feline Pine® Self Cleaning Litter Boxes (picture on the right) these sifter style boxes are great for keeping the shelter clean for the kitties.
  • SwheatScoop unscented kitty litter – this clumpable litter has no silica dust or sodium bentonite, potential causes of cat upper-respiratory problems.
  • Gift cards to PetSmart or Petco – an elegant solution!
  • L-lysine 500 mg capsules
  • Omega 3, 500 mg (or lower) capsules
  • Fish Oil 500 mg (molecularly distilled)
  • JW Pet Nail Clipper for Cats from PetcoJW Pet GripSoft Medium Deluxe Nail Clippers from Petco
  • Nail trimming scissors – two preferred models shown at the right
  • Unscented Baby Wipes for kitties that make messes on themselves, but don’t need a full bath!
  • Large litter scoopers! How do those keep getting tossed out with the litter!
  • Feliway "Comfort Zone" refills
  • "Rescue Remedy", used to calm stressed animals (available at New Seasons)
  • Break-away collars for cats.

  • Collars and step-in harnesses for dogs in sizes red step-in harness
    • Small (10-15 lbs)
    • Small/Medium (15-30 lbs)

Microchipping Project

We'd like nothing better than for all lost pets to make it safely home – and a significant step toward that goal would be the ability to implant and detect microchips in all pets in our system.

  • Funds to complete chipping of all the cats and dogs currently in our care. Thanks to a generous gift from Jeff Wiese, we have been able to move substantially toward our goal. But we will need a bit more to finish the job.
  • And then of course we can use additional funds to keep the program going as new homeless pets are accepted into our system

  • A video camera for recording our adoptable pets to post with their descriptions on the Web site.

I've Got Questions!

Some of these items have Web site references – couldn't I just go down to a store?

Answer: Absolutely! There are any number of excellent local sources. We've been told that The Pet Barn in Cedar Mill, for instance, is "lovely about supporting animal causes". The Web site references are just (a) an easy way to show you a picture of what we had in mind, and (b) a quick and easy way for you to make a purchase without leaving your home. In addition, both PetSmart.com and CatToys.com are vendors in the iGive Mall at iGive.com (super-easy to join), where a percentage of each purchase is sent to the cause of your choice – which of course is Animal Aid, Inc. (Portland OR).

Don't believe this really helps? CLICK HERE to see the real-time donation statistics. If you're asked to name your cause, remember we're Animal Aid, Inc. (Portland OR).

If I buy online, where should I have the gift(s) shipped?

Answer: All deliveries should go to our new building at 5335 SW 42nd Ave., Portland, Oregon 97221-3513, but if your gift is small you might want to bring it by yourself and meet the kitties that will be enjoying your gift!

What if I think of something that's not on your list?

Answer: We love creative thinkers, but you might want to check in with us at before you purchase anything large – we may already have received nine of the same thing...

If I bring/send the cats a gift, is it tax deductible?

Answer: Yes – because we are a 501(c)(3) organization, all donations are 100% tax deductible. Remember two things, however: (1) We can only give you a receipt if we know who you are and what you donated, and (2) keep your sales receipt, since the "thank you" note you receive from us can acknowledge only the item itself, it cannot assign it a value.

Do you keep this list up-to-date?

Answer: Yes – well, we try hard. If you are considering a sizeable purchase, you probably ought to give us a call to check – if just to hear our shouts of delight.

What if I just want to give money?

Answer: Also an excellent choice! Our food and medical expenses, sadly, require actual money. If you prefer the convenience of donating on-line, you might want to visit our Donations Page to see just how easy this can be.
