Heartstrings: Room in Your Heart But Not in Your Home
Sponsor Tango!
It’s hard to be a 15-year-old, declawed cat and suddenly find yourself as an outdoor-only kitty. Tango’s former family banished him from the home, and when one of our wonderful volunteers realized what had happened and that other cats were beating him up, she came to his rescue. She persuaded his family that this handsome Chocolate Point Siamese mix should come to Animal Aid where he would receive lots of love and care while waiting for a home to spend his retirement years. This affectionate guy starts purring when he sees a visitor coming and does a hearty flop-and-roll combo, and then reaches out with his paws. If you’re not paying enough attention to him, he will hold your hand and very gently nibble on your knuckles. Then he will rub his big head against your hand for a scratch or two. What a charming boy! |
Sponsor Schatzie!
Pretty as a picture, that’s Schatzie. With her Calico markings and intense eyes, Schatzie is a real beauty. Schatzie arrived at the shelter with her feline friends Lady and Caruso when their 95-year-old guardian passed away. As his health deteriorated, this kind gentleman grew even more concerned about the welfare of his pets and sought a no-kill shelter that could care for and find a loving home for his elderly cats. For the past year, he was in and out of the hospital and the cats spent a great deal of time alone, which meant all three cats were quite timid when they arrived at the shelter. In her previous home, Schatzie (a term of endearment) was known as the outgoing one. This beautiful 12-year-old Calico with intense eyes needed some dental work when she arrived at the shelter, but is doing well now. Schatzie is still adjusting to the shelter, but this lap cat would really like to find a lap of her own. |
Sponsor Pearl!
![]() The exquisite Pearl is one of a kind. Pearl came to us from a shelter with a high euthanasia rate, but she has been given a second chance and she is blossoming into a beautiful gem.
Pearl was in a foster home during the fall of 2007. Her foster mom reported that Pearl loves to snuggle in bed in the evenings. She is an avid bird-watcher and spends lots of time on the windowsill. She is also very good with ‘jingle balls’ (and anything else that ‘scoots’ well). She wasn’t too keen on her feline “foster brother” at first, but she eventually began to enjoy teasing him and chasing him around. And if you like an ornery streak in your felines, Pearl will steal your heart – after all, she ‘steals’ everything else. Pearl has a habit of taking small items from shelves, counters or dressers and stashing them in her own bed! She is a sweet and entertaining cat.

Sponsor Peaches!
Peaches is a perfect name for this sweet little gal with beautiful orange and white coloring. This mature lady of 15 years was a feral kitten when she was rescued. The kind lady who rescued Peaches worked hard to get her acclimated to the company of people. She provided a safe haven for Peaches until she passed away from cancer. Peaches then came to live with us at Animal Aid with several other “hard to place” cats. All of the other cats have found their forever homes, but dear little Peaches is still waiting. It takes a little time for Peaches to trust someone and show her sweet (and vocal) side. But once that trust has been earned, the rewards are great. Peaches loves her treats and to lie alongside those patient folks who sit on the floor and wait for her to come and visit. A kind volunteer has taken Peaches home to get a little R&R from shelter life.

Sponsor Mae!
Mae has had a difficult and sad life. She was a child's beloved pet – but the child was diagnosed with cancer. Chemotherapy caused the child to become allergic to Mae. Her family did not know that letting cats outdoors could expose them to diseases, so when she was surrendered to a shelter she tested positive for FIV.Unfortunately many people are not familiar with FIV and don't know that many cats live long and happy lives with FIV. Mae sat in the shelter for a long time waiting for someone to take the leap of faith and adopt her. She finally found someone who loved her sweet face and gorgeous feet! Mae thought she had finally hit the jackpot! She had a home for three years and then the unthinkable happened. Her person died! Poor Mae was in the apartment for days before she was discovered. Mae has snowy white fur that is very silky to the touch. She keeps herself immaculately groomed. She has a darling little meow and loves to give head butts. Although Mae likes to be queen of the house she will share it with a cat-friendly dog. Mae would love to have a permanent home in which to spend her retirement years. She's hoping the third time's the charm. Mae is a British shorthair - Polydactyl (extra-toes!) mix. |
Sponsor Lucy Lou!
Lucy Lou could melt anyone’s heart with her adorable pink nose and sweet personality. She loves attention and knows how to get it with her big purr, big meow and amusing antics. She has grown accustomed to lots of attention. She was born to a feral mom in September 2006, and was bottle-fed along with her five littermates. Lucy Lou is being fostered due to a condition called megaesophagus. This requires her to eat small meals throughout the day. Her foster mom spreads 40-50 kibble on a tray so she eats one at a time or plays catch with her by throwing a kibble out to her to chase down. Lucy Lou's foster mom has cut holes in a yogurt container & put kibble in there. As Lucy Lou plays with the container, a kibble comes out and she is able to eat slowly this way too! Always outgoing, this lively and affectionate girl with white fur and a gray cap rewards the kindness and loving care she receives with little kitty kisses. Even though she is an adult cat she is still fairly small and playful! |
Sponsor Lady!
Lady is a charismatic character. When you first see her, she will probably be sleeping on the top of the cat tower. She fancies herself as a bit of a jungle cat always sitting way up high. But if you just say hello, she’ll meow back and hop down to greet you. She would love for you to pet her long, slinky body. Since one of her eyes is a little cloudy, make sure you reach towards her from the side with the good eye so that she can see your hand coming, otherwise you may surprise her.Lady likes attention and will sit on your lap for a while, but she prefers to walk around while you pet her. If you’re on the computer or reading, she will be right by your side. She will have so much fun being involved in everything you do. She is the perfect companion who does fine with cat-friendly dogs. |
Sponsor Goldie!
![]() My name is Goldie. I arrived at the shelter in January 2007. I was scared and shy and overwhelmed at life in a shelter. There were so many cats and so much commotion with visitors and caregivers always coming in. And then I met Cindy. She said, “Come on over here, kiddo” and wrapped her arms around me and started grooming my head and back. It was so comforting to have another being care about me and know how I feel. I immediately fell in love with her. Cindy is much more outgoing than I am, and she meows at people when they stop by our room. And she has really helped me gain confidence. She’s young and energetic and so much fun. Though I have beautiful markings and the softest fur, I often wonder why she is interested in a 6 year old like me. But Cindy is not the only thing that I like. I like people too. I’m very affectionate and will bury my head into your hand, then purr and knead. If I really trust you I’ll roll over and expose my tummy so that you can rub it. And I’ll make muffins in the air while I’m upside down. The problem is that I am easily stressed. When that happens, I get diarrhea so I need a special food and medication. It’s hard enough to find a family who wants to take two cats home with them. But when one has to have medication and a quiet household, it’s almost impossible to find anyone. I know I am holding Cindy back in getting a home but I can’t imagine life without her. Check out our videos and you’ll see what a special couple we are. Here is a video of us napping with Mercedes. And here we are with Colby. |

![]() We’re going to need a very special home. But then we are a very special couple! My name is Cindy. I’m 4 years old and I have spent most of my life at the shelter. Even though I’m a good cat -- I love being petted, and I talk, make muffins and do headbutts -- I was overlooked because I was just another black cat to many people. I knew I’d get a home eventually when someone would take the time to find out how playful and fun I could be. But then Goldie came into my life in January 2007. She’s older than me and shy. For some reason, we just clicked. Many people think we’re an odd couple, but Goldie is my soulmate. I am drawn to her amazingly soft fur and I love to wash her. She is so cuddly, I love to wrap my arms around her when we sleep so I feel like I’m protecting her. We are never far apart from each other and she means everything to me. I would rather never leave the shelter than to be adopted without her. My sweet Goldie gets stressed easily and she needs to be on a special diet and medication or she gets diarrhea. Not many people are willing to take the extra time to care for her. I wish I could help. She also needs a patient person who is willing to wait for her to gain confidence in a new home. Even with me there she may hide for a while. And she’d do best in a quiet household too. I know we’re asking for a lot but we will give you a lot in return. I will show you how good I am at catching feather toys, and Goldie will show you her soft fluffy tummy. And there’s nothing more wonderful than watching two kitties in love. Check us out in the videos below: If you want to see us together, here is a video of us napping with Mercedes. And here we are with Colby. |
